Summary
This episode starts off in the Shinigami world. We see a desolate place, and the Shinigami playing cards and relaxing, while Ryuk is staring off in a distance on a cliff. They ask Ryuk questions to come play, but Ryuk isn’t interested, he says he’s going to go to the human world. Next, we zoom into Light’s classroom where he recites a translation regarding God for his English class. Light stares out the window the sees the Death Note fall to the ground from the sky. He goes toward it later, and at first is a bit hesitant, then picks up the Death Note. The rest of it basically follows the rest of chapter one’s format. After this, Light writes Kurou’s name in the Death Note like in the manga, but isn’t sure of it being done by the Death Note until he kills Takuo. From then, Light is seen contemplating his decision and the idea of murder, but shortly afterwards he starts killing people left and write with the stroke of his pen. Following this, he meets Ryuk who comes in. Light gets scared of Ryuk but after a while they start talking. Ryuk, though, seems to be a bit more talkative since he tells Light things without Light asking many questions about them. Light’s mother appears and brings apples into the room, after which Ryuk grabs one and enjoys it. Light thinks about how his mom can’t hear and see Ryuk. The rest though, is pretty much like the manga. Nothing is said about L yet though, so the episode is more complete and not as hanging as the chapter was.
Differences
- They don’t show the fear Light felt after killing Takuo (he was under the bedsheets deciding whether he would carry out his ‘mission’)
- Timing goes in order, it isn’t in a flashback format as in the manga.
- Light’s mom brings in apples and Ryuk tries them for the first time, commenting on them. Light didn’t have to GIVE Ryuk the apple, he just grabbed it himself (weird?)
- Ryuk seems to tell Light things instead of Light questioning him like in the manga
Ideas
So what’s next…
- Suprisingly, there was a lot more drama in the anime. An example of this would be the pen writing, how it seemed like the pen was a sword, shunning aside all those who were killed by it.
- The music fit EXTREMELY well in the anime, the church type bells and music really highlighted the idea of “God”
- The first episode stuck extremely close to the manga!
