Summary
The episode begins leaving off from the bus killing in the last episode. Ray Penbar stands outside of the bus with Kira. He begins to panic a little, telling Kira that he is working on an important investigation and Kira cuts to saying that he will not speak of his presence during this ‘accidental’ bus killing incident, or mention it to his father, the chief inspector. As Penbar leaves, Kira laughs to himself, knowing that his identity will not be revealed to the police since Penbar has just agreed mutually to this. When Light returns home, Ryuuk asks him if he is going to put Ray’s name in the Death Note, since he has now seen his face and knows his name. Kira says this would be stupid to do just after this bus killing, so he will kill him in a week.
We are now introduced to Ray Penbar’s fiance, former FBI investigator, whose name we do not yet know. After explaining about what had happened during the day, Ray’s fiance begins to conclude that the killing was Kira’s doing, but Ray stops her from making any more FBI-ish conclusions, saying that she is his fiance, not a FBI agent any longer. This cut scene proves to us that a FBI agent (although ex-FBI agent in this case) other than Ray knows about the bus killing, and so might actually take it into consideration.
In the next scene, there must have been a week’s passing since this is the scene in which Ray Penbar is killed. Kira plans the whole situation out quite well. Light is standing against a wall speaking to Ryuk in a public place, much like a market place, or where there are many stores. He informs Ryuk about his recent experiments with the abilities of the Death Note. By this time, Light has found out that if he rights the details of a death at first without a name, and then adds a name in front of it, the killing will still take place under those details (in other words, you don’t have to write the name of the person before writing the details, you may add the name later if you wish). We then see Ray Penbar begin to walk by, followed slowly by Light. Light approaches Ray, and whispers that if he turns around he will kill him, and cleverly pushes Ray into revealing that he has a woman he cares about. Kira takes advantage of this information and says that he has been investigating Ray for awhile. Complying with Light’s threats, Ray listens to the rest of what Light says. Light tells him that he is Kira, and to prove this he kills a man in a store nearby, saying he was a rapist who could not be sent to jail because there wasn’t enought of evidence. He then hands him an envelope. He tells Ray to take out the transceiver inside and put it in his ear. Light then leaves and communicates with Ray through the transceiver. Ray is ordered to take a train and from there Kira asks him how many FBI Agents are there in Japan. Ray tells him what he knows, when Light tells him to take out the papers in the envelope. He then tells him to put the name of certain leaders in the FBI which he would receive names and pictures of through his laptop. He complies with Light’s orders but wonders what Kira has planned. Ray is then told to place the envelope on the rack above him and leave the train. As soon as Ray leaves the train, he has a heart attack, but sees Light as he dies.
L is seen in the next seen, and is informed of the deaths of top agents in the FBI. During this time, Chief Yagami tells the crew on the investigation that anyone who does not want to be in this investigation may leave, and they do not have to worry about being fired. He says that those who are willing to risk their lives on this should stay. There remains only 5 people, 6 including Yagami. Suspicious of L’s involvement, these members question L’s choice of not being seen. How can they really trust him?? L sends a message through Watari’s laptop so these members can read but not hear or say what is being written. The message says they should leave the building before speaking any further about this. When they leave the building, one member still does not trust L, and leaves the case. So there are only 5 members total left. L then gives these people instructions to separate into 2 groups and meet him at midnight at a certain hotel room. He tells them that he will be changing hotel rooms frequently and that these will be the meeting places for this compiled group. As soon as they’re about to enter the room, the episode finishes! NOOO, WE WANNA SEE L!! =)
Differences
- Nothing too major, just a little difference I caught: After the bus killing part, in the manga, Light’s date still wants to go to Space Land, so he comes along with her. Ryuk then makes a comment about women, saying they are tough in difficult situations in the human world as well.
Ideas
- I love this part of the manga. This is the first time I saw the complexity and cleverness of Kira. The music seemed very fitting, added to the climax of Ray Penbar’s death!
