Summary
This episode starts out on the tennis court with Light and L. Light tells L that he is suprised that L suggested a tennis game in order to know each other better. He asks L if he actually knows how good of a player he is, to which L says that he is actually the British junior champion. Light asks if L if he is a British citizen, knowing that it might make him seem like Kira. L, however, tells him that he lived there for five years, but it’s impossible to figure out who L is simply from that information. Light, of course, gets a bit annoyed and says that whoever wins the first six games is the winner. L contemplates that it is a simple tennis game, but Kira hates losing, serving an ace serve. The score is at 15 love. Zooming out into the police headquarters, Yagami Souichiro is denying to tell the head of the Police headquarters about the case. This however, does not bode well, since his boss tells him that the media is saying that the police and L are incompotent. This brings Yagami-san to retiliate, saying that the police were the ones who ran with their tails between their legs, while L is the out there right now risking his life for the case.
Meanwhile, the tennis match has become heated, attracting linesmen, a referee, and the school tennis team who is wondering who the players are (Light and L). Light and L are thinking about what this game means to the Kira case. L thinks that Light needs to relax, and that Kira hates to lose, but that is not evidence either. Light, almost mind-reading, thinks that although this might seem like he is Kira, wanting to win, L cannot profile him through a simple game of tennis, thus, he hits the next ball, making up his mind to do just that (win). As the ball rushes past L, knows that he is trying to win, while Ryuk, of course, comments on the linesmen and referee announcing the end of the forth game. Suddenly, some random student runs out of the building, telling the leader of the tennis that Light is actually the the junior high national champion of 2002 and 2003, and quit when he started high school. The glasses-eyed girl in the corner gets happy thinking that L is actually holding up against a junior high champion.
By this time, L and Light’s thoughts are flying all over the place, like a mind-reading volley. They basically take turns analyzing the true meaning of this tennis match and predicting what will come from it. They deduce that this is actually a way to become closer together so that L will bring up the Kira case wanting to know things about Kira that only Kira would know. Of course, L presumes that when this happens, Light will want some proof that will prove that L is really L, which Light confirms a moment later. Therefore, they both conclude that they will meet in a public place then go to the police headquarters. At this note, the tennis match is done, with a 4:6 score, 6 being Light. Following the match, L and Light walk out of the school grounds and Light offers to buy L a drink since he won, at which he can ask him whatever questions he likes. L, however, takes his time to tell Light that he suspects Light as Kira, and wonders if, after knowing this, he still wants to talk to him. Light then stops and laughs it off. L tells him that it is a one percent chance, but he actually wishes that he is not Kira since his great power of deduction would be helpful for the case. Ending the conversation, Light thinks that although it is only a one percent chance he should be careful, while L knows that Light took a preemptive move and got him.
In the next scene, we see L and Light sitting in a coffee shop. Light questions why L sits the way he does (with his knees pulled up against his chest) and L says that if he sits the way normal people do, his reasoning ability will drop by forty percent. L then asks what it is that Light wanted to ask him, but Light tells him that it can wait after he has deduced that he is not Kira. Responsive to this, L asks if he can test Light’s deduction abilities. He asks Light to look at three notes which were written by the prisoners before they died, and that he would like his opinion on them since Kira might be able to control their deaths, making the prisoners write them. Light takes them from him, saying that they are interesting, but he is thoughtful of what is going on here. He thinks that this is just child’s play, since there are numbers in the back of the notes and if he came up with “L do you know Shinigami love Apples?” it would probably make him Kira, but solving this won’t prove anything. Light tells L that it would be pretty amazing if Kira can control their actions, and that these notes spell the message “L do you know Shinigami love apples?” However, Light makes use of the numbers in the back of the notes, saying that if they were ordered that way, it would say “L do you know love apples, Shinigami?”. But, he states with a smile, this doesn’t make much sense so it is hard to believe that Kira would write this. L looks at Light and says “incorrect”, saying that in actuality there is a fourth note, spelling out “L, do you know love apples? Shinigami have read hands.” Light looks closely at this, thinking that this is stupid since he didn’t write that note. He tells L that he was wrong, but if it weren’t for the forth note, it would have made his reasoning flawless. L, of course, doesn’t support this, saying that if he had guessed there were more notes, that would have made his reasoning flawless, but he assumed that there were only three notes and that is a fact.
Light calls L a bastard in his head, now aknowledging that this was not a test of deduction, but he just wanted to see Light’s reaction to all of it. With this, Light admits his mistake and L continues on with his testing. He now asks Light that if he was L, and suspected someone of being Kira, what would he do. Light, sipping coffee, tells him that he would try to make him say things that haven’t been reported in the news and that only Kira would know, like he is doing right now. L only replies “impressive”, stating that all the other investigators could not think of this point, and this makes Light quite brilliant. Light tells L that although he says this, he makes it seem that Light is actually Kira. L confirms this notion saying that the chance he is Kira is now up to three percent but it also increases his desire that Light help out with the investigation. His position is, as he tells Light, that even if he is Kira, he wants him to help with the investigation and questions Light about this Logic. Light, putting down his cup, states that if he isn’t Kira it would help advance the investigation and if he is, he would betray himself, making it a win-win situation. But, Light continues on, he doesn’t want to get killed since either one of them could be Kira and it is not fair that L is able to question Light like this when he can’t question L, going on to say ways this might be done. If this is done, Light discloses to L, then he will take part in the investigation. After this little spiel, L thinks that Light really likes to talk too much and is a classic example of one who likes to lose, making the percentage chance up to seven percent. Now catching Light off guard, he claims that he never told him he wouldn’t let Light meet the task force, and would allow him to do so. Suddenly L’s phone rings, followed by Light’s. Both phone calls inform them of Light’s father, who just had a heart attack.
We now are in the hospital, where Light and L are talking to Yagami Soichiro. Basically, they talk about the case. Light’s dad confirms that “Ryuga” is indeed L, sending Light into contemplating his death since he is the one standing in his way. When Soichiro asks L if the suspicion on Light is cleared, L says that the probability was small in the first place, but goes on to say why Light was suspected in the first place; because of the first two murders being in Japan, and then Ren Penbar. Light jumps in on this, orating that it makes sense since Penbar was investigating him, once again winningcompliments from L. Light tells L that he wants to help with the investigation, despite his dad being against it. He tells his dad he swore that if anything happened to him he would make sure that Kira got the death penalty. This wonderful line brings his dad to confirm his idea that Light can’t be L. L, on the other side of the room, speculates if this is really an act, and if it was an act it is incredibly corny. Yagami-san tells Light that Kira is evil but that the real evil is the power to kill someone, and if anyone had that power they are cursed since it could never bring happiness. L agrees with him, saying that if this were true, Kira is really a very unfortunate person. A nurse comes in telling them visiting hours are over.
Outside, Light asks L what he has to do to take suspicion off of himself. L says that if he isn’t Kira he doesn’t have to worry about it, but Light yells at him, telling him to think about what it must feel like to be suspected as Kira. L stops for a moment, and then looks at Light, remarking that he feels terrible. Light suggests that L stay with him a month or two by locking him up or something, making L wonder if most people would really go through such lengths to clear themselves of suspicion. L denies this request, saying it would be against his civil rights, and that it would be nonsense to take a suggestion like that from the person under suspicion. L gets in his car, and after a little exchange in dialogue, drives away, leaving Light with many questions on his mind. Light, addressing Ryuk, says that he never once considered finding the notebook and gaining the power a misfortune. In fact, he says, it makes him really happy and he wants to create a perfect world. Ryuk declares that he doesn’t care less about whether or not he is happy, but as a general rule, Shinigami say that humans who possess death note are met by great misfortune. Light looks at Ryuk for a bit, and then turns to walk away with him, mentioning that he will get to see an exception to that rule.
Now, at Sakura T.V. we see Damegawa complaining about not having good stories, especially on the Kira case. Just then, a lady walks in with a manila envelope that Damegawa empties on the counter, containing tapes and a letter. He laughs to himself, saying this is just what he wanted. The letter confirms that the tapes contain a message from Kira that should be broadcasted and failure to do so would lead to death. Damegawa, being the “interesting” person he is, doesn’t even think of that notion and is very excited by it.

Differences

  • One of the most interesting things about the news with the heart attack is Light and L’s reaction to it. They both say “Is it Kira?” which, although at first may not seem important, shows Light’s conniving ways to take suspicion off of himself, knowing full well it wasn’t him.

Ideas

  • I really liked this episode, but I wish they had shown more of the tennis match and action. Sometimes I get bored.
