Summary
In the beginning of the episode, Light says that he is giving up the ownership of his notebook. During the manga, and even a bit now, this seems to be a bit shocking and confusing. We then see a conversation between Ryuuk and Light, in which Light states that the next time he says “Discard” that he will be referring to the notebook. Meanwhile, the SPK and L are still watching Misa, except now Misa’s attitude about her kidnapping has completely changed. After awhile L receives a call from Light, and soon Light enters the room. Light says that he “might be” Kira. He explains that since L is the greatest detective in the world, labeling Light as Kira must mean that he really is Kira. Although Light says he might have killed while he slept subconsciously, L begins to get slightly irritated because of this little speech. From all this, L decides to detain Light long term.
On the first day of Light’s imprisonment, his father approaches L saying that he would like to be put off the case and imprisoned as well. L had anticipated this and so had already made arrangements with Watari. After a week, there have been no killings, and so it has pretty much been determined that Light is Kira but L does not seem quite satisfied. He doesn’t understand why Kira would turn himself in, or if he is even conscious of his actions. During this time, Yagami is struggling with the information. When we see Light again, he says it’s about time, and finally says the word “Discard.” With this Ryuuk leaves and Light is free of his thoughts of Kira. Here is when L is even more confused with Light’s sudden change.
Soon the killings begin again, and the suspicions of Light being Kira decrease. L is now truly confused.
Differences
- In the manga, there is a far smaller hint on what is happening with the forfeit of the notebook…

- This is a very interesting point in the story because there is so much to predict!
