  • Characters: Below.
  • New Characters: Light, Ryuk, Sayu, L, Yagami, Matsuda

Summary
This episode begins with Light’s shock in seeing Ryuk in front of him. Ryuk laughs at him recalling how Light had tested the power of the Death Note and was now desperately writing more names down everyday. There is then another scene of Light in his classroom but this time Ryuk is with him and continues to follow him around school. Light reminds Ryuk that although no one can hear Ryuk but him, everyone can still hear Light. When Light arrives home, he goes straight to work, to which Ryuk inquires. Since Light has only so much time, he tells Ryuk, he must use that time to do his daily writing in Death Note, and still keep up his top grades and strive to be a top detective. At this time, Sayu, Light’s sister comes in asking for help in math. This scene actually does not occur until after L’s death in the manga. This is the scene in which Ryuk tells Light that if someone touches the notebook, they will also be able to see Ryuk. The end of Sayu’s scene is also suppose to be an introduction to Light’s father, but he is not introduced as Light’s father in this episode. Light thinks of a way to hide his notebook (these details can be read in the manga summary in chapter 4 =P).
After this scene, we see the FBI and police arguing over the spontaneous heart attacks that were happening to many criminals around Japan. We then see Watari enter, who speaks for one of the greatest detectives, only known by the letter L. L draws conclusions, saying that their is a killer out there, that these heart attacks were not just coincidences. The next scene is the first to show L’s mindpower and Light’s blind area! While watching another news channel, a person so-called Linda L. Tailor indirectly speaks to Light (so-called Kira by most of Japan, meaning ‘killer’). He says that what Light is doing is wrong and that he WILL find Light, and stop him. Light immediately tries to write off the character on the television, and not surprisingly, ends up ‘giving’ him a heart attack. But, the letter L is shown on the TV, and the real L speaks, saying that Kira had just fallen into his trap. That this ‘Lind L. Tailor’ was actually a criminal who was to be executed the same time that day. Now, L knows that Kira can kill someone just by seeing their face AND that he was somewhere in the Kanto area of Japan because that news channel was only shown in that area. Both L and Light declare here that they will win this game and that they are ‘Justice.’

Differences

  • The Sayu scene does not occur until after Lind L. Taylor’s death. Meaning, Ryuk does not yet tell him about the sight from touching the notebook.
  • The method that Light uses to conceal the notebook from others is not shown until Chapter 4 in the manga; too early in the anime.
  • The scenes in the manga with Light’s friends are cut-off in the anime.
  • Light’s mom is not shown in the anime like she is in the manga.

Ideas

  • The episode was overall pretty good; I loved seeing L’s trick animated because there seemed to be a lot more suspense about it all =)
  • Although there were some changes in order from the manga, it still seemed OK because by now these order changes should not change the overall effect of the series :P
