Summary
Without showing their faces, Higuchi is approached by both the police and the team. L then says that if Higuchi doesn’t tell them what his method was to kill that he would use every method to make him tell them. Higuchi confesses that he used a notebook and Yagami pulls out the notebook from Higuchi’s bag and then suddenly screams at the sight of a monster in front of him. When Mogi begins to doubt him, he also picks up the notebook, and sees Rem. Rem think about Light’s tactics and realizes that once he touches the notebook not only will he be able to see her like the rest of the team, but he will have his memories returned.

As L touches the notebook and spots Rem he utters the word “shinigami” realizing that this isn’t over yet; there should be 2 notebooks, for 2 kiras. Light reaches over and grabs the notebook and, with a rushing scream, gains all his memories back!! We see the evil in his eyes as he says that he has won!

We now see what Light actually did with the notebooks back before the Yotsuba saga. Light relinquishes his ownership of his notebook back in the forest, but this notebook belonged to Rem. Rem then has the ownership of the notebook but he hands it to Ryuk who after has the ownership and drops it and Light picks it up for ownership. Light holds his first notebook with a cloth and hands it to Ryuk who hands it to Rem. Hence, the first notebook he found has been given to Rem and Rem gives it to “someone in a position of power with strong ambitions,” or Higuchi, so that Misa can be cleared, or else Rem can kill Light. This all works out because Light knows that once he loses his memories and gives up his ownership of the other notebook he will try to hunt down Kira and eventually succeed.

Back in the present, Light, holding the notebook, decides he will first kill Higuchi. He turns his watch setter knob 4 times to open it where he left a piece of Death Note paper. With a needle he pricks himself and writes Higuchi’s name in blood. L watches Light as Light watches Higuchi, who dies within Light’s “longest 40 seconds.” With an evil eye, Light says L is next.

Back in the headquarters, the rules are read aloud but as Mogi turns to the last page, there are some fake new rules that Ryuk wrote in:

-Any humans who have touched the notebook and tried to tear or burn the notebook will die.
-If the person using the notebook fails to continuously write names of people within 13 days of each other, then that user will die.

The crew begins to think that Light and Misa have been cleared of suspicion but L is hard to let go of his suspicions. L agrees to stop surveillance on them both and to remove the handcuffs. Light is about to say goodbye to Misa but moves so that the security cameras won’t be able to read his lips. He then tells Misa that he needs her to go somewhere but she has to make sure she is alone and that no one can see her.

She goes to the forest and digs up the notebook and receives all her memories back and finds a letter that Light wrote. He tells Misa to write L’s name in the notebook and then discard of the letter and keep a few pages of the notebook with her and then bury it again. This way the next time they meet she can touch him with the paper. BUT Misa can’t remember L’s name because she saw hundreds of names everyday. Ryuk comes and Misa gives him an apple sent from Light. Misa says she wants to do the deal, but Ryuk warns her that she already made this deal once with Rem and doing it again means she’s cutting her life in half again.

Misa returns to the headquarters and touches Light with Death Note paper which allows Light to see Ryuk. Rem sees her through the security camera and realizes that she made the deal with Ryuk. Misa tells Light that she can’t remember the name but she made the eyes deal. Light plays on her weakness, saying she didn’t have to do that and that he’s decided that he wants to live with her in their ideal world.

Differences

  • Nothing too noticeable

Ideas

  • When Light gains his memory back, the effects were pretty freaky.
