Summary
This episode begins with a small flashback of children playing in what looks like a school. One child is crying, and a bit later we can hear a church bell ringing. Panning down the screen we see Watari, standing in front of the bell, holding the hands of a child, who looks like L. Back to the present, Watari asks Ryuuzaki what is wrong, and what he will do.
At the headquarters, L is asking Rem some questions about the Death Note; whether or not a person can tear out a piece of the Death Note and use it (to which Rem says he doesn’t know), and if Shinigami eat apples (to which Rem says that they don’t really need to eat in general). Shifting his eyes towards Light, L asks him why he just sits around listening, and should go on a date or something. Light asks him if his presence is troublesome to him, and L replies in the negative, looking at Light’s scary eyes.In a dark room, we hear Misa thinking about Light’s words from before, that she will have to judge criminals in his stead, and help create a new world. When we see her a moment later, she is dressed as a Lolita and ends up walking down the streets in Japan, singing a very eerie song (directly listed here, as translated by Kuro-Hana Fansubs):
“Take Care of yourself, God is Watching. Don’t hand yourself from your hand in a dark alley. Even if you talk alone, he’ll always find you. He knows, so tell him your sins. Tell him, even if you don’t know his face. But what am I going to do if heaven’s doors are closed to me?”
At headquarters, Yagami walks in, distressed about criminals dying again since Higuchi’s capture. The group brings up the idea that Higuchi wasn’t Kira, but this is quickly refuted by Light. L seems incredibly confused. In the background, Rem thinks about what is going on, since Misa is the obviously the one killing. L, as if hearing Rem’s mind, brings up the point that the killings started right after Misa’s release, causing Light to interrupt him and remind him not to bring that up again. L then stares at the notebook, wondering about the rip at the bottom of a page, and Rem’s answer about using torn pages of the notebook. If it were possible to kill using a piece of the notebook, then it would be the missing piece, but the 13 day rule is the only one throwing off his theory against Light and Misa. Light then mentions a new point, about the capture of whoever the murderer is. How would they accuse a mass murderer who wrote the names down in a notebook? To this, the group chimes in, stating that in that case, the notebook should be made public and then destroyed. Ryuuzaki though, simply states that if they capture the killer, he would be a death penalty or life sentence anyways, so it doesn’t really matter at this moment, after which he continues to eat his panda cookies. Rem, quite confused, wonders what is going on, since at this rate, Misa will…
Suddenly, Light’s intentions immediately hit Rem (At which she calls him a bastard). As Light shifts his eyes and mouth in an evil grimace, Rem thinks to herself that Light’s true plan depended upon Rem saving Misa’s life. When she does write Ryuuzaki’s name, she would die, extending Misa’s life. At this, Light himself wonders what Rem will do, now that she realizes that he already knew about Rem’s feelings for Misa. Would Rem really let Misa suffer this much, and live such a short life?
After intermission, we see Light walking down a hallway quietly, and in a moment we find him on the rooftop, in the middle of rain. Light sees L there, and asks Ryuuzaki what he is doing twice, but Ryuuzaki can’t hear him, so he walks out in the middle of the rain to ask him. L simply answers that he hears bells ringing loudly, at which Light gets confused, saying that he can’t hear anything. Despite this, L continues, stating that he can’t help hearing them, and that they are probably wedding bells or… Before he mentions more, Light tells him not to say stupid things. Following this, L tells Light that he is distant in relationships and doesn’t trust anyone. When L just looks down, Light agrees with him, saying that he avoids relationships, and he knows this the best. At this L says that despite this, Light is the same, questioning him if he has ever told the truth since he was born. At this, Light is taken off guard, justifying himself by saying that everyone tells lies, no one can be perfect, and even so, he never tells lies that would hurt the people he loves. L simply listens and states that this is why he is so popular, and they should head inside, since they are soaking wet.
On the steps, Light rub a towel on his head, drying himself. L walks in, looks at him, and then offers to help dry and massage Light’s feet. Light, a bit astonished, tries to refuse, but on L’s insistance, he lets him. When Light sees that L’s hair is dripping, he tells him that he himself is wet, wiping the drops from his head. After a pause, L tells Light that he is sad, and when Light gives him a questioning remark, he tells him he will understand soon. At this, L’s phone rings, forcing L to move from his position at Light’s feet, and go back towards the headquarters, stating that things might turn out well after all.
Back at the room, L asks Watari if everything went well, and when he says it didn’t, he instructs him to get permission. Light, a bit surprised, asks what is going on, to which L tells him that he means to test the notebook for himself. Matsuda inquires who will write the name in the notebook, and answers back saying that the writer will be a criminal who will be executed soon. They would make a deal with him, in which he will be set free the criminal if he does not die within 13 days. When the others try to protest, L asserts that it is very vital to find this out and with it, they can close the case within moments.
At the end of L’s words, lightning resounds outside, at which a brief glimpse of Rem is seen. In a moments time, the lights turn off, and Rem is seen backing away from Watari, who is collapsing on the floor, reaching out towards the computer. In his last seconds, with L calling out Watari’s name, Watari presses a button on the keyboard. At the headquarters, all the monitors suddenly bring up “All Data Deleted”, causing L to look at the screen seriously, remarking on his instructions to Watari to delete all data if something unexpected should happen to him. He then turns to his side, asking where the shinigami is, who is nowhere in sight.
Before he can mention another word about Rem, a heart beat is heard, and L drifts out of his chair, his spoon falling in slow motion towards the ground. In the background, we see the same scenary as the beginning of the episode, with mosaics and church bells ringing, as Light holds onto Ryuuzaki. As Rem whithers away, L’s eyes, still wide open, stare at Light’s face, which is ecstatic with happiness. Once they close, Light suddenly screams out Ryuuzaki’s name, asking him what is wrong. He then looks towards the rest of the team, telling that “it” is going to kill them all, Watari, Ryuuzaki, and then all of them too. All of them back away in fear, and Light’s expression briefly becomes stale, before he continues his rampage, asking “Where are you Shinigami?”, running out the door. They all decide to go help search as well, but Light goes into a room, picking out Rem’s notebook from a pile of dust, stuffing it in the back of his pocket. He then asks everyone to come there. Light tells them that the shinigami must be dead, and they must catch Kira for the sake of L and Watari. When Matsuda states that they can die as well, Light simply tells him that if he is scared of death to leave, walking out of the room.
Strolling down the same hallway that he did in the beginning of the episode, Light tells himself that he has won, and as thunder lights up his positively evil face, that he is the god of the new world.
Differences
- Misa never sang a song like that
- There was no roof scene
- There was no scene with L rubbing Light’s feet.
Ideas
- When I first saw this episode, I immediately thought “Yaoi” but then, after various comments, people mentioned that L wiping Light’s feet was symbolism of Judas and Jesus. Supposedly, Jesus washed people’s feet, and he washed Judas’s feet, so it was referring to Jesus as L, and Judas as Light. Reference on Wiki can be found here.
- This episode was very well done. The symbolism along with the music really made it worthwhile. It seemed like they really worked hard on it as well. A++, a must watch for every manga fan. Effects and music fit very well! Even I was surprised.
