Summary
December 2001. Mello, the blond kid, asks Roger to repeat what he just said. When Roger tells him he is dead, Near, the boy playing with the puzzle, remains quiet, while Mello grabs Roger by his shirt, asking him if he’s saying that L, who was supposed to capture Kira, was killed in the process. In the background, the younger boy, calling Mello, tells him that if you can’t win the game, can’t solve the puzzle, then you are just another loser. Mello looks at him for a moment, and then asks Roger who L picked between him and Near. Roger though, looks at him quietly, and says that since L died, he couldn’t choose, hence wondering if they should just work together. Near tells him that it’s fine with him, but Mello makes an irritated face, saying that it’s impossible since he never gets along with Near. He then says that Near is different than he is, since he thinks of everything like solving a puzzle, and hence he is going to leave, since he is almost fifteen years old and wants to live life like he wants to.

March 5, 2012. Near explains that an officer near Higuchi heard of him speak of a notebook in which the person whose name was written down would die, basically a Death Note. The notebook, in turn, is currently in the hands of the Japanese police. As he speaks, narrative text goes across the screen, stating that a young boy, Near, brought 3 years of independent investigation on the Kira case together. Together with the Chief of the FBI, they met with the president of the United States. The chief then goes on to say that the current L is one created by the Japanese police in order to keep order, and the real L died. When the president asks who the boy is, the agent tells him that he is the true successor of L. The narration now picks up once again, stating that in America, an independent investigation squad, with no relation to “L”, called the SPK (Special Provision for Kira) was formed. The organization itself consists of numerous investigators from the FBI, with the CIA as it’s main force.

Back in Japan, we see Matsuda talking about the Kira case, stating that its hard to keep information from leaking on the internet, and he wishs that the people who post names of people they want dead on the internet would die as well, since Kira doesn’t kill them. Misa tells him that Matsuda is being silly, and Light confirms this, saying that the world has changed for the better, and this is what some people might be thinking, though Light himself thinks that most people will think this way sooner or later. At this note, Sayu, all grown up, walks in, and when Matsuda compliments her, a little argument consues. When Misa clings onto Light, Sayu tells them that Light and her should get married already, to which Misa agrees. Ryuk, the observer, finds all of this amusing, since this family is very unfortunate and they act in such a weird way. Just then, Aizawa calls in, and Light as well as Matsuda leave towards the headquarters (a small room with computer screens). In the car, they find out that the Director of Police, Takimura was kidnapped, and it was in ties with the Kira case. When they reach Aizawa, he explains everything, and says that they demand the Death Note, to which they are all a bit surprised, since only the people in the room should know about it.

Light becomes very serious, since there is another person who knows about the notebook. In the office, Yagami is informed that someone is there to see the director. When he is showed in, he identifies himself as John McKenro of the FBI, a fake name because of the Kira case. The agent tells him that the Japanese police aren’t fit to handle the Kira case, and they request that they hand over the notebook to their country. At this, Yagami grabs him, accusing the FBI of kidnapping the director. In front of a multi-screen computer screen somewhere, Near the SPK are listening in, as one of the co-workers questions why they would have anything to with the Japanese police. Near tells them that someone must have kidnapped the director, and are demanding the notebook. He tells the guy beside him, Commander Lester, to inform the police that they will cooperate in apprehending the criminals who did the kidnapping, an given the opportunity they will just steal the notebook.

A person with blonde hair, blue eyes, and chocolate walks into a room with bunch of people, asking if the prisoner, Takimura presumably, said anything. The interrogaters tell him that he didn’t know anything about the notebook although he was the chief. Mello asks him if Yagami is the one with most power on the Kira case, to which the director confirms. Mello announces that according to his theory, there are two notebooks, one with Kira, and the other with the Japanese police, and they will own them both. The bald guy behind him says that they will listen to Mello because he has never been wrong since the 1.5 years he was with him. Another subordinate questions Mello’s need to get the notebook, since he himself had killed a mafia boss that even Kira couldn’t lay his hands on. Mello says that the notebook is all he wants, so he can kill everyone who gets in his way, and would become #1 and defeat Near. Standing in front of a mirror, Light picks up his pen.

As Mello and the others are waiting around in a room, a guy runs in and tells them that Takimura just hung himself with his necktie. The bald guy gets mad, but Mello says that it’s okay, thinking to himself that if it was Kira, that means that he knows about the kidnapping, but doesn’t know their identity so he killed Takimura. At this, he takes a bite off his chocolate bar, telling them that the next target is Soichiro Yagami’s daughter, Sayu. At headquarters, the task force discusses about the kidnappers, and Yagami tells Light that the FBI agent that visited him as John McKenro is actually a real FBI agent named Ray Conners, so they can trust the FBI. Light thinks to himself that the director must be dead now, but they haven’t contacted them about it yet. Out of nowhere, Misa walks in, telling Light goodbye in some lingeri, making everyone except Light and Yagami (who aren’t looking at her) blush. After this, Light suddenly says that they aren’t the only ones in danger, but their familes as well. Just at this note, Yagami gets a phone call from he kidnappers, saying that the exchange for the director is off since Takimura is dead. But now, the exchange for the notebook would be Yagami Sayu. To make sure, after the phone call, Yagami calls the house, asking if Sayu was home, but his wife tells him that she wasn’t yet. At this, Light tells the force that the person who killed the director must be Kira, not the kidnappers, since Kira probably didn’t want the notebook to fall into their hands since he thinks he’s an ally of justice.

At the SPK, Lester tells Near that the director is dead. When Near asks who did it, Lester says that it would be the kidnappers, at which he says nothing. When the other person next to him mentions that it would be interesting if Kira killed him, Near states that he’s right, and if it was him, he’s really tightening his grip. At this, Near then changes the subject slightly, asking the whereabouts of Mello, to which Lester can’t give any real answer, except that he was at the same institution four years ago that Near was. Near tells himself that Mello is acting on his emotions again, that is, if he actually was behind the kidnapping (which he still wondering about).

4am. the kidnappers tell Yagami that his daughter has finally arrived, and that he should come to L.A. in two days and bring the notebook with him. To confirm that it’s Sayu, they sent a picture of her to the police, with a telivision running in the background. Light looks up the program immediately, confirming that it is playing right now, therefore showing that Sayu is safe. Yagami gets up, and tells the task force that as the director and as Sayu’s father, this whole incident is his own responsibility. Light though, tells him that he should decide a plan. Back at the SPK, Near explains to them about Kira, and that if Kira did kill Takimura, that means that he has some way to get information within the Japanese police force. After he finishes talking, “L” (Light) calls, telling them that he heard from Yagami what Rally Connors had to say, and if they would still aid them with the case, to which they agree. At this, Near asks the person who picked up the line at the SPK to give him the phone.

Getting the phone in his hand, Near directly tells Light that it’s nice to meet the SECOND L, catching Light totally off-guard. Light tries to cover it up, but Near tells them that they are the new group called the SPK and the higher ups already know of L’s death, and he is the leader of the SPK, N (obviously mocking Light heh. Light catches on to Near playing around with him, and notices that this aura is very much like L’s.
