Summary
Our new character Mikami leads the beginning of this episode. We see him leaving his apartment and riding the bus where a kid is bullying another kid sitting down. Mikami remembers his past and says that humans are only either good or evil. There were always enemies in his life who he made by saving others from bullies. Hearing a thank you from someone else was enough for his happiness and later he was able to gather more students to face bullies. Yet in Junior High he was not able to ward enemies and those who used to get beat up turned a blind eye and sometimes even joined in with the bullies. His only ally was his mother until she started to tell him that he was only causing more trouble by trying to fight against these people. Later the four bullies died in a car accident also killing a pedestrian, his mother. The classroom became more peaceful after that and Mikami continued to believe that evil must be punished. So Mikami became a prosecutor and fought against this evil. Hearing of Kira, Mikami became excited and when Kira gave him the Death Note he was convinced he was worthy of the power.
Since Mikami killed Demegawa too early, Kira found himself moveless, and Mikami takes the initiative to find a replacement for the spokesperson. Takada Kiyomi, Light’s former girlfriend is chosen. Light concocts a plan to get Takada on the “police’s” side and use her in the investigation. In truth we know that Light will be using her as a Kira’s helper. Light wants to meet up with her and so calls Takada with Aizawa there. They decide to meet after her news show in a hotel, “just the two of them.”
Waiting in the hotel, Light uses his charms to catch Takada offguard and blush. She receives a call from Mikami and lets out the word “Kira” from her mouth. Mikami asks to speak to the person who is there with her. This is perfect for Light because now he has contact with Mikami, and it’s time to play the right moves. He tells Light to turn on Sakura TV, and shows that he can kill. Kira writes a note saying to remove the cameras and bugs set up in the room. This gives Kira much leverage! Light tells Kiyomi that he is Kira, astonishing her and making her fall right into his trap AND arms (hahaha). Light calls up the others later and tells them that he will pretend to be her boyfriend to get the information he needs.
Differences
- Mikami seems to have made the decision himself about choosing a spokesperson. In the manga, he tries to ask Kira’s permission first about it on Kira’s Kingdom- where everyone was to try out to be the new spokesperson. This event plays a huge role later on.
- It shows Mello and Matt investigating Misa here, but it didn’t show it before- which makes it really odd.
- Mikami doens’t get in touch with Light so soon. Instead, Light meets with Takada and first time to ask her to voice her opinion to Kira. Mikami finds this odd, and connecting the dots, he calls her in Light’s second meeting. He then talks to Light – Mikami doesn’t rely on “luck”.
- When Mikami calls Takada, he doesn’t have to get the hint from Light to kill someone to prove himself- that’s the first thing he does in the manga.
Ideas
- Mikami’s voice actor is amazing. The way he said “Kami” in the phone with Light was out of this world.
- I wish they didn’t make the connection so obvious, it seems more like just pure luck Mikami calling like that- it doesn’t make any sense Death Note-wise.
