This episode begins with Near thinking that he should go to Japan now that all the pieces are in place. Calling Lester, Near requests him to come back to New York once again, since he wants him to escort him to Japan. Back at headquarters, Matsuda remarks on Misa’s success of infiltrating the NHN since she will be on the show. Light says that he will be watching Takada as they infiltrate. Immediately following this comment, Near rings in, saying that he is in Japan and will now be investigating the case from there. When Light acts surprised, Near tells him that it is natural to investigate in Japan since keeping an eye on NHN and Takada Kiyomi is common sense. Furthermore, Near tells Light to tell Takada that the SPK is there in Japan so taht he will be able to bait Kira and they will try to kill them, but instead Near will kill him instead. In their thoughts, Light and Near have a face-off, since they are both in Japan and will meet up soon. Light acknowledges the fact that before, it was a fight between Light and L, but now it’s between himself and L’s successors, but everything is fine and when he meets Near, the fight will come to an end with Kira as the victor.

At Near’s headquarters, Near opens a little box of Lego Figurines which he wants to use to review all the information they have gathered. He states that L is Yagami Light, L-Kira for short, but the other one who is the current notebook owner is X-Kira who has the shinigami eyes, while Takada is the bridge between them. Near then takes out a fake gun, and says that there are two ways of dealing with them. The first is killing both L and X-Kira in order to take the notebook. This method, however, is something the SPK will not use since that is not the way they work since it’s trial and error, something neither he (Near) or L would have accepted.

Zooming out, Light heads over to Takada’s place again, where they talk about random nonsense like fan letters while writing notes. Takada picks up the note which tells her to calm down since what he writes next will be quite shocking. On the next note, Light tells her that “T” has other missions and he wants Takada to carry out Kira’s judgements. At this, Takada gets astonished, but Light covers it up with some small talk. Takada agrees. A while later, Takada calls Mikami and tells him to send a fan letter with five pieces of notebook paper. When Mikami asks about this, Takada tells him that he will no longer carry out the judgements but keep a fake look-alike notebook which he will write the names in. Mikami wonders about what ‘God’ is thinking, but does not dwell over it, since his judgement is absolute.

On the telivision, the Kira’s Kingdom program is interrupted to announce Takada’s new bodyguards, which included Hal Ridner, that Light immediately deduces to be a SPK member, astonished that Near didn’t even try to hide it. Back to Near, Near is wondering who X-Kira is, digging through hundreds of recordings related to Kira on multiple telivision screens. Near knows that Takada was chosen because she is a Kira supporter, so X-Kira must have known that she was a supporter. Almost immediately, Near notices Mikami Teru, who had contact with Takada, and if he was X-Kira it would all make sense. Walking with Mogi at the NHN studio, Misa comes to a halt after seeing Takada. She says softly that Takada is an idiot since she doesn’t know she is being used by Light in his investigation. Takada then looks at her and smirks, making Misa angry who goes to get Takada, but Ridner stops her. Takada, still smiling, tells Ridner to stop being harsh since she is one of her friends. This just makes Misa more angry. At the headquarters, Near rings in and asks Aizawa if there are cameras and bugs when Light and Takada meet. Aizawa tells him for right now, there are only bugs, after which Near thanks him for the information and hangs up. Near tells Lester that right now the most important thing is to let L concentrate on Takada, and use the change to get to Mikami.

Tailing Mikami, Gevanni says that it’s extremely easy to tail him, suspecting that he is X-Kira. Near, however, tells him not to worry about this, and keep a close eye on him since he is a very likely X-Kira. Zooming back to Misa, Mogi tells her that Takada wants to have dinner with her alone, and Misa, a bit suspicious, accepts. Ridner, telling Takada that Misa has accepted, is asked to reserve a room for both of them, and asked to stay during dinner. At dinner, Takada asks Misa about Light, after which Misa tells her that Light is very clingy and she will announce her engagement with him on New Years. She asks Takada if it would be alright to announce it on the show. Takada tells her that its okay if she is able to. Misa then asks Takada if she will ask Kira to kill her, to which Takada says she does not do that sort of thing. In either case, Misa tells Takada that it is only a matter of time before Light catches Kira, and when he does, Takada will be put to death. At this, Takada chokes on her wine as she laughs to herself, remembering that Light is Kira. Takada tells Misa that she isn’t happy and they can have dinner when she has grown a bit older and has more manners, although Misa herself is older than her. When Mogi asks, Misa tells him that she “won”.

Later that evening, Ridner reports to Near about Takada and Misa’s meeeting, which discussed who Light’s real girlfriend was. Form this, Near simply says taht this information means that there is a love triangle between Light, Misa, and Takada. When Lester tells Near to be more serious about it, he simply states that it is serious, since this means they will follow him with their lives. At the subway station, with Gevanni watching Mikami, a girl is being hit on by a random man. At this, Mikami takes out a notebook on the subway, writes a name on there, and walks out of the train. The girl screams a couple seconds later, as the man dies. Gevanni is shocked.

Differences

  • A lot of thoughts are cut out here. Such as when Light tells Near that he’s keeping an eye on Takada, and Near thinks that he’s smart since he did it to gain trust from the his members.
  • When Near challenges Light, many of the facial expressions are cut here, and a few lines that might be important.
  • When explaining to Rester, Near doesn’t mention the part about catching X-Kira in the act of writing in the notebook.
  • Near seems to come with Mikami Teru much too quickly. Also, one of the deciding factors in his deduction was when Mikami asked Light for permission to choose a new spokesperson (well, implied it). But, that was cut off in the anime.

Ideas

  • Since they cut out so many key elements, it seems as if Near is deducing things out of thin air.
