Summary
The first chapter of Death Note introduces Raito, a 17 year old boy Raito, who, looking out the window and sees a black notebook on the floor.
In the meantime, in the Shinigami world, Ryuuk, a shinigami, states that he lost his Death Note in the Human world and is thus going there to find it. Raito heads outside, picks up the black notebook, which reads “Death Note” on its cover. Looking inside, he finds a set of instructions written in English — and since he is Japanese, he states it will take a while to read and takes it home with him. Once home, he reads the
Death Note Terms and thinks it is a joke. After all? How can a notebook kill people? Five days later, Raito returns home from school and looks at the Death Note in the drawer. Before he can say anymore, Ryuuk speaks and Raito glimpses his first shinigami.
Although he is shocked at first, Raito quickly regains himself and asks Ryuuk a couple questions: 1) If Ryuuk will take his soul, 2) If there was a price to pay by using the Death Note, and 3) Why he picked Raito. We then see a flashback of Raito’s first kill, Kurou OtoHarada and then the motocyclist gang member. In the flashback, Raito becomes astonished, calling the Death Note an evil thing, but then decides that he will use it to cleanse the world of the “rotten mess”. The problem though, as we see, is him questioning himself to take on such a task (a bit scared to as well). Ryuuk, upon hearing this, questions his motifs and Raito answers that he will now create a new world, one that he will reign over. Zooming out, we see a meeting of the G8 countries, and Interpol (All those in Europe probably have heard about this, since not many people here do— it’s the International Police organization, it’s highest police force. If your criminal name is in the interpol list, they can broadcast and track you down across countries). Either way, we see a new character sitting in front of the laptop watching this convention, talking about them finally take a move, and him taking the case…
