Summary
This chapter begins with a nice black and white foldout of the Shinigami wondering where Ryuuk went, and the rumors of a human having his Death Note. Immediately, we see a nice scene with Ryuuk and Raito conversing. Ryuuk is questioning him about his confidence since the news has Kira and L all over the place, and Raito still looks fairly relaxed, and Raito replies that this is due to the fact that he needs a break, and when he took up the Death Note, he was quite confident he could handle the police themselves.

Suddenly, their conversation is interrupted by Sayu, who enters the room and asks Raito for help in her quadratic equations homework. Raito lets her in, and Ryuuk calmly warns him of another rule, that if she touches the Death Note she will be able to see him. Sayu picks up the newspaper Raito was reading and comments on him being a detective. In the meantime, L is questioning why Kira couldn’t kill him before, and quickly deduces in the next panel it was because Kira didn’t know what he looked like. A call comes from Watari, and tells L that the investigative report is about to begin, patching L through.

The report itself stated that all the deaths occured between 4-am Japanese time, weekdays/holidays between 11am to midnight. Following this, some commentary was made about numerous phone calls being placed to the police station questioning the credibility of the previous chapter’s broadcast as well as some uncredible claims that the callers themselves were Kira. When the report finished, the chief detective asks if anyone would like to add anything, and Matsuda stands up, stating a critical point: that the crime rates had decreased incredibly in Japan.

Ending their briefing, L asks the police force to look into all the news reports and media coverage of the criminals and see if their faces were shown. Assigning tasks to the rest of the force, Yagami leaves, only to be followed by Matsuda. Matsuda questions if his statement about decreased crime rates was wrong since it would seem that he was supporting him, and the director replies negatively. Back at home, Raito is tutoring his sister when his father comes home. Raito goes downstairs and sees him sitting on the steps, suprised in his state. They go downstairs, and have dinner together, and Yagami states that he is a bit stressed out since the case is like chasing a ghost, mentioning that they suspect that Kira is a student.

Ryuuk now sees that Raito’s confidence comes from his father, and Raito slowly gets up and leaves the table after he finishes, instructing his mom not to come in his room since he will be “cleaning”. Raito goes into his room, and confirms with Ryuuk that he the Death Note specifies that he can kill anyone at specified times, so he can kill them with a heart attack. Three days later, Yagami announces that there were 23 more deaths like the day before, every hour of a heart attack, disconfirming their theory. While they state this, L quickly corrects them, announcing that this was not the purpose, that Kira is saying that he actually has a way to OBTAIN their information AND kill whenever he wants. Meanwhile, Raito and Ryuuk are going to some random ruins of a house and Raito tells Ryuuk that L is probably getting flustered and in this case he has set aside 50 more targets. Ending the chapter, Raito comments that after Ryuuk told him that touching the Death Note allows other people to see the shinigami, he had been carrying around the Death Note with him and this was quite dangerous. That in fact, he is walking a tight rope and if he isn’t careful he will end up killing his own family.
