Summary
This chapter begins where the last ended: Raito and Ryuuk in an abandoned house somewhere. Raito explains that he cannot allow his family to see Ryuuk, who innocently asks if it wasn’t possible to say he is his friend to which Raito replies “My sister would have a heart attack if she saw you”. They start a bonfire and Raito stares at it with an evil grin in his face. In the meantime L meditates in his apartment. Based on the hours of the deaths, he believes Kira must be a student, though it was proven he can also choose the time of the deaths. He wonders if he is being fooled. To L the main concern is how Kira found the information on the investigators and wonders what the next step will be. He walks to his computer and contacts Watari, who is at the police station still. L tells Watari to leave the room, go where no one will see him and contact the director of the FBI with a message that L wants to talk to him.

In the next scene, Raito and Ryuuk are walking towards a department store. The shinigami asks him why are they shopping and Raito explains he needs a few things to hide the Death Note.

He says that it is important that he hides it somewhere with easy access but also where his mother and sister would never find it.

He believes L is now investigating the police and to catch Kira he will need either a confession or the Death Note, so he has to hide it well. While they are shopping, Ryuuk is curious; he asks if L is investigating the police, won’t he investigate their children as well? Raito answers that humans are false and stupid. He won’t beat L by just hiding. He comes to the conclusion that the police doesn’t trust L and therefore will investigate him themselves; Raito plans to use this information to destroy him.

Meanwhile Yagami Souchirou is having difficulties. His staff hands him letters of resignation. When asked why they reveal that they praise their own lives too much. If Kira can kill without touching his victims than anyone is a potential target. The detectives also reveal that every victim had their faces shown on TV and every police officer who has shown his ID might be next. They storm out of the room, leaving Souchirou to talk to himself. In his hotel room, L watches the commotion with interest; he now knows that Kira needs to know his victim’s face. The police officers’ grow more suspicious of L’s participation in the case.

In his bedroom Raito shows Ryuuk his new hiding place. The Death Note is hidden inside a locked drawer, but once it is opened there is only a normal diary. To find it, the person needs to open a pen and remove the tube, put it in a hole underneath the drawer and a secret compartment opens revealing the Death Note!

Ryuuk is impressed, but Raito’s plan has yet another secret. If the tube is not placed correctly an electrical device will be turn on, gasoline will be spread over the notebook and it will be destroyed. But that is not all!

If someone tries to open the secret compartment by force, boom! The Death Note catches fire too. Ryuuk is amazed; he confesses that Raito is the first holder of the Death Note to hide it so perfectly. But wait, you must be wondering, isn’t that dangerous? Well, Ryuuk thinks the same thing but Raito, as carefree as he always seems to be, answers that it was dangerous since the beginning. “What would you choose:” Raito asks, with his hands on the back of his head. “Have your house burned or being executed?”
