Summary
The chapter opens with the police cars and Ryuzaki’s helicopter having completely surrounded Higuchi’s car and corned him into a wall from which it is impossible to escape. Soichiro and Mogi offer to move in on Higuchi and Ryuzaki allows this, but tells Watari to be ready to stop Higuchi in case he makes even the slightest move. Soichiro and Mogi put on helmets to defend themselves, and begin walking over to Higuchi’s car, when Aizawa salutes his chief, and feels honoured when Soichiro asks for assistance. Higuchi is told to come out of his car with his hands up, after which he is handcuffed and has tape put over his mouth and eyes. As Rem stands on the sidelines realising that at this rate the Death Note will be uncovered, Light gives the order to Mogi to give Higuchi a headset so he and Ryuzaki can question him.

Using the headset, Ryuzaki immediately asks Higuchi how he has been killing people as Kira, and Higuchi eventually reveals that in his car there is a notebook that kills whoever’s name you write in it, if you know what they look like. Ryuzaki tells Soichiro to collect the notebook from the car, and when Soichiro touches it he is stunned when he suddenly sees Rem. After a fit of screams, Soichiro goes to grab his gun to shoot at this ‘monster’ but realises he is unarmed.

Mogi tells him he must just be tired, but when he touches the Death Note he too is able to see Rem before them. As Soichiro realises that whoever touches the notebook can see this creature, Ryuzaki instantly thinks that it may be a Shinigami, and requests to have the notebook brought over to the helicopter immediately so he may touch it too.

Rem understands that Ryuzaki and Light must both be in the helicopter since they’re handcuffed together, and that if Light touches the Death Note all his memories will return. But if Light then lets go of the Death Note, all those memories will be lost again. Ryuzaki is handed the notebook and becomes able to see Rem as well. He quickly begins to think about the evidence where a notebook was mentioned, such as show each other our notebooks in Aoyama where Light and Misa first met, and also figures out that since there were two Kiras at one point, there must be another notebook out there somewhere…

Meanwhile, Light is now holding the Death Note and his mind is suddenly flooded by all his old memories of the notebook. Ryuzaki determines that since they surely cannot test it, they must instead just question Higuchi and “the monster” itself.

As Light holds on to the Death Note, he tells Ryuzaki he will compare the list of names written inside to the list of Kira victims. As he looks away, Light gets a huge evil smirk on his face, thinking to himself “I’ve won…Exactly as planned!” He now thinks all he has to do is kill Higuchi without writing his name in the notebook or letting go of it, and then have Misa recover her buried Death Note to complete his plan…
