Summary
With Light’s cunning and masterful manipulation of humans and Shinigami, he’s finally gotten Rem into a corner. As we saw in the last chapter, Rem only wants to save Misa, and will do anything for her. Rem has begun writing the names of everyone she can that is a threat to Misa within the timeframe Rem now has left to live, having sacrificed her own life by writing names that will directly effect Misa’s lifespan. He starts with Watari, which is exactly where the last chapter ended. All the monitors L and the taskforce were looking at go offline, and they hear a crash from the other end. We see L and the taskforce yelling to Watari, trying to find out what’s wrong. Then we see Rem writing the name in the notebook. And then…
We see Light, wearing that wickedly evil grin. He knows he’s won.
We witness Watari, in the middle of his fatal heart attack, deleting all the data from all his monitors on the other end, his final act. Then he falls out of his chair onto the ground and moves no more. On the other end, Light asks L what’s going on. L explains that he instructed Watari to set up his system so that if anything ever happened to him, he could wipe all the data from the system with the push of a button.
He drops the spoon he was holding. Shoichiro asks him what’s wrong. And then…
He topples to the left. The task force stares in horror as the chair comes out from under him and he falls to the ground.
Light rushes to his side and lifts him up so their faces are inches away from each other. Light yells “Ryuzaki!” The task force continues to stare in horror as L stares into Light’s eyes, and thinks “Light Yagami…” And for a second, Light dawns his evil, malicious grin, clearly saying to L, “I won.” As his eyes close, L thinks to himself that he knew it, he wasn’t wrong. He begins to contradict himself when he goes limp in Light’s arms. Light yells out “Ryuzaki! Hey, Ryuzaki!” The task force desperately asks what is going on. Then Light screams. They tell him to calm down but he continues to scream. Aizawa begins to scream, and Light turns to the task force and tells them they’ll all be killed. Watari, then L; they’re next. Everyone’s eyes open wide and they prepare for there death. Light calms down and puts down L’s limp body. We see that it’s been 40 seconds. The task force is safe for now. Someone suggests getting an ambulance. Shoichiro volunteers to accompany him.
Later that night, the task force are all sitting around a table, waiting, wondering why they’re still alive. Shoichiro walks in, with a somber expression, and announces that Ryuzaki is dead. Light pounds the table, yelling “Damn it!” Her stands up and begins to walk away, the task force asking him where he’s going.
He yells for everyone to come to him, and they do. The task force examines the ashes, and Light says that whatever happened, no matter who killed L, he swears to avenge his death, saying that solving the case will be a gift to Watari and L and all those that suffered from Kira’s crimes. Matsuda says they’ll be killed if they continue. Light tells him he can leave if he fears death. Matsuda says that he’ll of course stay, and tells Light not to talk like Ryuzaki. Light stares at the other end the room, rocking that evil grin. Everyone in his way, L, Watari, is gone, and the task force, though confused, trusts him completely. From this point on, its only a matter of time before he has complete control of the police, and…
The new world will have its God.
