Summary
The chapter opens with Raye Penber’s wife convincing herself that Kira murdered her husband.
At this time, the Yagami’s are having a family meeting at the dining room table. Soichiro takes this time to formally tell his family that it is he is the one in charge of the force heading up the Kira case investigation in Japan. He informs his family that 12 F.B.I agents were sent to Japan, but were subsequently killed by Kira. With a depressed look on his face, Mr. Yagami admits to his family that this piece of information means that whoever attempts to catch “Kira” is likely to be killed. Many policemen on the Japanese police force are quitting their positions, the cause being fear for their lives. This scares both Sayu and Mrs. Yagami into questioning whether or not Soichiro should quit. He however garners a stern look and tells the two that he will see this case to the end, and will “Not succumb to evil.” This honorable speech is a wasted one, as the Yagami’s are still unaware that the murderous Kira is sitting right next to them! Light stands up (and with beautiful acting skills and deception), tells his father just how proud he is. He also tells him that if anything were to happen to him during his investigation, Light would personally bring Kira to justice. Ryuk “hyuks” away and compliments Light’s acting while telling the boy just how impressed he was of Light’s perfectly planned murder of the F.B.I agents.
.... But how did Light do it? How did he get his hands on that file and find out the names and faces of each F.B.I agent that not even the Japanese police had their hands on? We find out in flashback form, as we see Light (with a fashionable beanie cap and hooded sweat-shirt hiding his face) and Ryuk standing in the Shinjuku train station underground. This is a week after Light first finds out Raye’s name…
Apparently Light has planned to “do something” here in the train station, and admits to his shinigami that he has been testing the Death Note finding different ways to kill people. He has apparently found out that if you write down the certain details of a person’s death before hand and then fill in the name later, that victim will still die that way. An impressed Ryuk humbly stands waiting. Nearby, Raye Penber the F.B.I agent who was tailing Light shows up! He doesn’t know Light is there, but apparently Light was already aware that the man would be showing up. Flipping his hood farther down his eyes, he approaches Raye Penber from behind. He says, “If you turn around…I will kill you.”
A stunned Raye Penber is speechless as Light continues to tell him that the person standing behind him is in fact the one and only “Kira” and if the agent turns around or tries anything funny, he will kill him instantly. Immediately Raye realizes that he has heard this voice before…but can’t remember who it is! To prove that he is in fact Kira, Light points to a coffee shop employee sweeping the shop nearby, and the employee drops dead! Informing Raye that the deceased was a rapist who had not been convicted, he also tells the F.B.I agent that it is in fact true that he cannot kill someone without knowing what he or she look like. Light informs Raye that he has “taken someone he loves” hostage (a blatant lie) but it is enough to make Raye truly listen as he thinks Light means his fiance. Raye tells Light that he’ll do whatever he wants as long as she isn’t hurt. Realizing his lie struck gold, Light gives Raye Penber a large yellow file that holds a transceiver.
Light Yagami looks down at him with the devilish grin of ultimate victory. Light says his goodbyes…and Raye passes…a defeated man.
We go back to current time and Light is looking over the envelopes that Raye Penber had filled out for him. He reveals he killed each F.B.I agent with heart attacks and forced them to receive and ask for that same file before they died. Also their times of death and times they received the file were completely randomized. It’s practically untraceable. We go back to the mysterious “L” and he thanks the NPA director over the phone for giving him this information. L has deduced the order in which each agent received the file and the order each one died. He is still focusing on that the important clue in this stage of the game is that the order in which each agent got that file is the important clue. And that he had to have met up with one of the first to receive it….
And then we see the familiar woman…Raye’s fiance’. She stands in an empty train car…her destination unknown. Her goals? Unknown.
