Just some facts to note about the Death Note Movie (1st one)!
The Death Note movie was released, it knocked The Da Vinci Code from its 4 week top spot in the Japanese Box Office, to number 2, making it number 1 and maintaining that position.
This subway snippet states how the Death Note Movie required the entire subway line to be reserved for it, something that never happened in Japan before (especially during active hours)

Death Note movie will be put on the screen in eight countries in Asia. This has already been decided in Hongkong, Taiwan, Thai and Korea. Also it will be on screened in Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, too. (The release date is not known yet.) The movie will be released in about fifteen countries other than Japan. In Taiwan, Golden Harvest will distribute this movie.
They say it’s very unusual that a movie whose preview hasn’t held yet gets such many offers. Now buyers in Germany, France, Italy and other countries have begun to negotiating over showing in their countries. Finally over fifty film distributing companies have offered at Cannes International Film Festival. A lot more countries are asking Nippon TV to distribute in their own countries as well.
The reason of high popularity is that the movie keeps an accurate atmosphere of the original comic.

As for the contents of the movie, the story is somewhat changed, for example, as you know, there’s an original character only for the movie, Shiori. The director Shusuke Kaneko says “I think to make a story different from the original is another way to show respect for the original.”
According to a rumor,(I couldn’t find out where this news is from.) part1 (Light vs. L) will be divided into two. (So there will be no Near nor Mello in the movie.) Personally, I guess there’s some probability that L doesn’t die at the end of the second movie…Anyway, Light needs to be beat to bring the story to an end. (This is my wish, though.)
