Page 2 Luxaky* (Ryuuzaki) (pg. 39 63)

*(For those thinking, What the hell, this is the spelling of Ryuuzaki as seen on page 41. Since its the spelling used in Roman letters in the book, Ill use it going forward).

A little background about L, who was envied in the detective world. After WWII, there have been three great detectives, L, Erald Coyle, and Donuve (not sure of spellings), but theyre all the same person. Mello describes more about L, the name Luxaky and Ryuga Hideki, and what the name L meant to L. Due to Ls close ties to the name L, Mello wonders if L knew what name was really written in the Death Note to kill him.

Back to the LA BB. They are in Believe Bridesmaids dining room, sitting across from each other on an expensive sofa (I dont think the author realizes that in America, its called a Living Room). Misora receives a business card from Luxaky, who introduces himself as Luxaky Luee. Misora stares at the boy in front of her who is biting his thumbnail, and sitting with his feet in his arms, like a child. This makes Misora feel too much like an adult. She looks down at the business card again DETECTIVE Luxaky Luee.
She asks him if he is a private eye, which he says he is not, but rather a non-private eye. In other words, he doesnt have a license. She thinks that if she had a pen, she would write FOOL on the card, but decides to distance her from the dirty card by putting it on a table.

Misora asks Luxaky what he was doing there. He replies that he was investigating, just like her. She finds his unblinking panda eyes creepy. Luxaky says he is investigating after getting a request from Bridesmaids parents. Misora is worried about how much he overhead her and L speaking. She thinks that if shes jeopardized the investigation, then shell be in big trouble.
Luxaky thinks Misora is a private eye, so she goes along with it (since she doesnt have her FBI badge and shes on leave). She tells him shes looking for the killer of the three victims, which Luxaky says he is as well. Then we can help each other out, he says.

Misora asks if Luxaky found anything under the bed, but he says that he was hiding when he heard someone enter the house and wanted to see if possibly the killer came to pick up something he forgot. Misora thinks hes lying. Luxaky asks Misora to work with him, but she says that she will pass due to a privacy clause.

Mr. Luxaky, you have one too, right A confidentiality clause.

No, I dont.

As a detective, you couldnt not have one.

I see. Then, I do.

Luxaky says that solving the case is first priority, so hell share his information with her. Although Misora refuses, he tells her that it doesnt matter if he or she solves the case. Shes still on the edge, wondering what hes up to. He tells her she can decide later if she wants to share information, but first shows her a folded paper from his jean pocket.

Misora takes it and opens it to find a crossword puzzle that has been solved. Luxaky has caught her off guard.

This is

Oh, you know of it

Ah, no I didnt mean it that way.

Misora realizes its the crossword puzzle sent to the LAPD and wonders why Luxaky has it. She realizes that Luxaky has been staring at her and how she reacted to the puzzle. He tells her the history of the puzzle (sent to LAPD, no once could solve it, hidden address clue). She realizes how difficult the puzzle is and wonders if Luxaky solved it.

Luxaky says that Misora can have the puzzle and says that he believes some kind of message has been left behind in the house (just like L). This makes her wonder more about the boy, and whether he was just listening to her conversation with L when he was under the bed.

Luxaky then excuses himself, jumping from the sofa and heads to the kitchen. He opens the refrigerator, takes out a bottle of something, leaves the refrigerator door open, and returns back to the sofa. Its a bottle of strawberry jam. When Misora asks about it, he says its something he brought, and its lunchtime. Misora is confused since she understands bread and jam, but just jam Luxaky sticks his hand directly in the bottle and begins eating.
Hmm Is something wrong, Ms. Misora?

You you have a strange meal for lunch.

Really I think its normal.

When I use my head, I want something sweet. When I want to do a good job, jams the best. Sugar is good for the brain.

I I see

Misora thinks that he doesnt need sugar for the brain, but a good shrink. She compares him to Winnie the Pooh, but he isnt a cute yellow bear, instead a tall, slouched over man. After his fourth dip, he uses the jam bottle like a cup, slurping up the remainder. He says that he has another bottle of jam in the refrigerator if she likes, but she politely declines. While licking his hands, he says they should continue their investigation.

Mello diverges into Misoras connection with the Kira case and how if Kira had known that she worked with L on the LA BB Case, he probably wouldnt have killed her off so quickly.

When they get back to the bedroom, Luxaky gets on all fours and looks around the bedroom, like a cockroach. He asks Misora whats wrong and says that he should join her on the ground, which she quickly shakes her head to. She quickly changes the subject and says that they probably wont find anything else, since the police checked it over. Luxaky disagrees, since the police overlooked the crossword puzzle.

Misora decides to exchange a small bit of information, and shows him a photo of the victim. He commends her on getting such a piece of information from the police, which prompts her to ask him where he got the crossword puzzle. Thats confidentiality clause. He responds.

She ignores him and when he asks about the photo, she tells him that the wounds on Believe Bridesmaid look to be like letters. He tells her theyre not letters, but roman numerals. So, the roman numerals become the following numbers: 16, 59, 1423, 159, 13, 7, 582, 724, 1001, 40, 51, 31. Luxaky is able to spit out the numbers very quickly, but says since hes looking at a photograph, he may be wrong, but hes 80 percent sure.

Luxaky says that theyre not sure if the wounds should be taken as a clue from the killer, since it could lead them in the wrong direction. At this point, Misora excuses herself to fix her makeup.

She runs to the bathroom on the second floor and dials 5 on her phone to contact L. She tells L about the mysterious private eye, the photograph discussion, and that he has the crossword puzzle. When she asks him what she should do about him, L asks:

Was he cool looking
What
Im asking if that private eye was cool looking.
No, he was the worst.

Misora sputters off that if she wasnt on leave, she would arrest him, and if she had to separate people in the world into a group that should die, Luxaky would be one of them. This leaves L speechless. When he does speak, L tells Misora to let the private eye work with her, but not to let her eyes off of him. He could be of help to her though. When L asks where Luxaky is, Misora tells L that shes calling from the bathroom. L tells her to go back to Luxaky and find out if he really was hired by Bridesmaids parents. He tells her she can call him on the same line again, if she wants.

When Misora opens the bathroom door, Luxaky is standing there. He tells her that he found some new evidence after she left, but since she took so long to return, he decided to stand by the door. Misora worries what he might have overheard and if he was spying on her.
As theyre walking to the bedroom, Luxaky mentions that he didnt hear any water running when she left the bathroom. Realizing her mistake, he tells Misora that she can go back to flush the toilet. She tells him the truth that she was on the phone and there were things she talked about that she didnt want him to hear. Luxaky tells her that next time, she should make sure to flush the toilet, for camouflage.
Upon arriving at the bedroom, Luxaky gets on all fours again and heads to the bookcase. He tells her that he has found, not new evidence, but the truth in the bookcase. He tells her to look at the shelf, second from the bottom on the right hand side, where there are eleven Japanese comic books, Akazukin Chacha.

So, what about it

Its a favorite manga.

Whose

Mine.

Luxaky asks if Misora is Japanese American. She says that her parents are both Japanese, and she has dual citizenship, but she lived in Japan until she was in high school. Luxaky says that she should know about Ayahana Mins legendary manga. He then describes how much he liked the anime as well, which prompts Misora to tell him to get to the point. She tells him that she knows about Akazukin Chacha, the manga and anime, but doesnt see the connection. He tells her that they can talk about the wonders of the anime version later, and asks Dont you realize something

Misora doesnt, and doesnt find it strange that Believe Bridesmaid owns the original Japanese manga version. He could have been able to read Japanese, but then again, some fans just collect the original, and with the internet, its easy to get the original. She checks all eleven books and still doesnt realize what Luxaky is pointing out.

He points out that the killers message is there, that books four and nine are missing. Akazuki Chacha is 13 volumes, but there are only 11 volumes. Misora says that perhaps he didnt have those books, or planned to buy them, and points out that not everyone reads books in order.

However, Luxaky is firm in thinking that nobody could read the series out of order. Misora says that even if that was the case, it doesnt mean that the killer took the books. Maybe BB lent it to a friend, which Luxaky denies as well. There is no one in the world that would just want to read books four and nine. I dont mind betting my jam on it!

If were talking about the jam you just ate, you can buy that for around five dollars, right

As Luxaky presses on about the two missing books, she begins to realize something. She asks Luxaky if he knows how many pages each book was, and surprisingly he answers 192 pages and 184 pages. Misora does the math and realizes that it adds up to 376 pages, so she begins to look on the bookshelf for a book that is about 376 pages thick, which doesnt take long. Its a book called Not Enough Play by Permit Winter (spelling), which is exactly 376 pages.

Misora looks through the book and doesnt notice anything suspicious in particular. She thinks that the killer took the two manga books off the shelf and replaced it with this one. She begins to question many things like if the bookshelf had been emptier, if this book had been brought in from another room, and if the Akazukin Chacha books really were owned by Bridesmaid.

Luxaky asks for the book and begins reading it, in typical L fashion. He reads all 376 pages in five minutes. He then says that there is nothing in particular in the book to help them out, except the page numbers. Misora asked for the roman numerals again and he recites them. She then thinks that the numbers match the page numbers, although there are numbers higher than 376.

Luxaky says that in the case of 476, if you add 376 plus 100, it means to look on page 100. He quickly flips through the pages again and says hes figured it out. He hands Misora the book and tells her to look at the first word on the page that matches the number.

Numbers:
16, 59, 1423, 159, 13, 7, 582, 724, 1001, 40, 51, 31

(in the case of 1423, subtract 376 three times to get 295, etc.)
Words of matching pages:

quadratic, ukulele, tenacious, rabble, table, egg, arbiter, equable, thud, effect, elsewhere, name.

They then take the first letter off the twelve words collected:

Q-U-T-R-T-E-A-E-T-E-E-N

Although it looks similar to the second victims name, four letters are wrong. Luxaky declares that since a third of the letters are wrong, this is not the killers message and it was just a coincidence. Misora disagrees and tells him that all the wrong letters are where the number was greater than 376. First, she looks up tenacious. She realizes that in this case, they should have looked at the fourth letter, since it was four times past the start of the 376 mark (376 + 376 + 376 + 295 = 4), meaning that the letter was A. For 582 arbiter, it should have been the second letter®, etc.

In the end, it does spell Quarter Queen correctly, and the killer did leave a message like in the case of the crossword puzzle. Well done, Ms. Misora. A perfect deduction. You got the best of me, I cant compete against you.
