Page 3 Opposite (Hantai) (p. 65-87)

Mello describes why L never showed himself to anyone, due to the danger if such a great mind was ever targeted. He compares L to how a country would protect a great work of art. In 2002, Ls mind was the equivalent of five detective organizations and seven intelligence agencies. If anyone knew what L looked like, they could kill him, lessening the chances of ever being caught. It wasnt that L was shy, he was just protecting himself. Protecting himself equaled world peace. So, as a result L often worked through other people, in this case Naomi Misora, who probably knew she was Ls shield. Also, Mello ponders on how much Luxaky solved the case vs. Misora (in the page numbers, etc.)

August 16th. Although Misora wanted to go directly to the second victims place Downtown on Third Avenue from Bridesmaids house, she had a lot of things to review and it ended up being the next day. It was three days since the third victims death, so based on the numbers, she believes the next murder will happen four days after the third murder, or on the 17th and she feels the pressure of not knowing how to prevent it from happening.

Based on Ls research, Luee Luxaky had been asked by all three victims families to investigate this case. So, L tells her to let Luxaky help her out. She suspects that hes come to a decision about Luxaky.

At 10 am, in a dark, unwalked alley, someone tries to attack Misora from behind with a black jack. She knew someone was behind her, so she quickly avoids the attack. She tries to kick the attacker, but misses. When she faces the single attacker, he has a black jack in one hand and a large pipe in the other. Again, she doesnt carry a gun, or her badge, or handcuffs. The attacker tries to hit her with the pipe, and she tries to kick him, but both miss. Then the attacker flees. She decides not to pursue since running isnt her strength.

Misora decides to try to call L, but cant get through. She feels the attack has something to do with the case, and decides to call Raye and have him dig up some information.

As suspected, the attacker checks that Misora hasnt followed him. He jumps in a sedan he left running. He dumps the sedan (which he stole) and leaves all evidence behind in the glove box. His objective in attacking Misora wasnt to kill her, but to just test her. He knew she wouldnt die, because he knew that she would dodge his attacks. He praises L for picking such a pawn to use. The attacker walks away, with a creepy smile, the culprit in this case: Beyond Birthday.

In Quarter Queens apartment, number 605, Luxaky greets Misora, but scolds her for being late. Hes searching the drawers, but Misora catches him when hes looking through the victims underwear drawer. She thinks he looks like a pedophile instead of a detective.

Misora looks around the room, which is smaller than Bridesmaids bedroom. Its a bedroom meant for college students. Quarters mother has moved out, due to shock, back to her parents place. Luxaky mentions that hes gathered some interesting information from different people, most of which is already in the police report. The mother was traveling, and the first person to discover the body was the student who lived next door. The mother only saw her daughter in the morgue.

Misora looks at the walls where the straw dolls used to be. Luxaky begins crawling on all fours and she notices that unlike Bridesmaids room, there is a lot of stuff in this room, since two people lived there. She believes the killer has left a puzzle there. She checks the door lock, which also has a deadlock. She asks Luxaky if there is any way to open the door, but he replies only a key can open it. She mentions a needle and thread trick like in detective novels, but he says that that wouldnt work on the door.

They discuss how the killer created a closed room and for what reason. Misora thinks its for games, but Luxaky repeats For what reason. Since they still havent found the missing link, there are no answers.

Misora takes the second victims photos out of her bag. The blond girl with glasses lying face down, head cracked and with her eyes bludgeoned. The eyes were bludgeoned after her death, like Bridesmaids wounds. Misora wonders what kind of person could do such a thing.

How awful to kill a child.
Killing an adult is awful too, Ms. Misora. It doesnt matter whether a child or an adult is killed.

Luxaky has finished searching the apartment and announces that nothing of monetary value can be found. Misora is taken aback that thats what he was looking for, but Luxaky says that it could have been a robbery and would provide a connection between the victims. He suggests they take a break and have some coffee.

Luxaky goes to the kitchen and Misora sits down (wondering if he has jam in the refrigerator). He returns with two cups on a tray, placing one in front of her, and sits in typical L style in his own chair.

When she begins to drink the coffee, she spits it out, making groaning noises. Luxaky scolds her for spitting things out and tells her that since she is so beautiful, she should watch her image and not make such awful noises. She complains that its so sweet, it must be poison.

Its not poison. Its sugar.

When Misora looks in her cup, she sees that it looks more like melted sugar with coffee mixed in.

I feel like I drank mud
Mud isnt this sweet.
Sweet mud

Misora watches Luxaky slurp his coffee, so she knows that he didnt make only hers that way. She has an awful gritty taste in her mouth that wont go away.

When hes finished, Misora asks him about the missing link, which he tells her that last night he discovered something interesting. The initials of the victims first and last name match. (Believe Bridesmaid, Quarter Queen, Backyard Bottomslash = BB, QQ, BB). Misora is a bit disappointed since anyone could see that. She tells him that there is one person out of 26 that would match that description, since there are 26 letters in the alphabet. (not sure what the logic is behind this math)

She tells him that even he has matching initials (Luxaky Luee or LL). Oh. I didnt realize that, he responds. She feels stupid for hoping he would bring up something important. She thinks that there has to be some message that deals with the third victims name or address. She thinks back to something that should be there, but isnt and wonders if there is such a thing in the apartment.

Luxaky suggests they skip this place and go to the third victims place to look for a clue that would help them out, but Misora argues that there may be something in the apartment that would help them prevent the fourth murder. Luxaky suggests they split up and she continue to search the apartment, while he goes to Bottomslashs place.

Misora takes out her case binder from her bag and hands it to Luxaky. She shows him the crime scene photos of the third victim. Its a gruesome sight with the victim lying face up, with her left arm and right leg cut off, in a pool of blood. She tells him that the right leg was left in the bathroom, but they couldnt find the left arm.

Misora says that shell spend the afternoon searching the apartments. Luxaky agrees and tells her that in one of the cabinets is a photo album she should check out, to see if any evidence can be found from it. Misora takes the chance to go to the bathroom to rinse out her mouth (three times!). She wonders if she should call L, but fears that in such a small apartment, Luxaky would be able to hear her conversation if he stood by the door.

She stares at her reflection and begins to think about the letters, and who L is. Since no one has seen L, when he looks in the mirror, Does L know who he really is The word mirror makes her think of different things like opposite. She runs out of the bathroom back to Luxaky, who was staring at the crime materials. He asks her what is wrong and she asks to see the photo of the third crime scene.

Misora takes the two other crime scene photos from her bag and lines them up. She asks him if he notices anything and then goes on to say that Bridesmaid and Backyard are faced up in the photos, but only Queen is faced down. Since Quarter Queens corpse is faced down, its unusual.

Luxaky asks her to let him think about this, and says that she should try sitting like him. Your deductive skills will increase by 40 percent. Please, try it. She tries to refuse, but decides to give in because its better than crawling around on the ground. Plus, it might help her to relax but in the end, she regrets it.

Back to Quarter Queen facing down being the message, she tells him that since the initials are QQ (and not BB), that itself could be the missing link. Luxaky says that because of her initials, maybe she was killed by accident, instead of a person with BB initials. However, Misora brings up the clue from the first crime scene that spelled out Quarters name.

9 days, 4 days, 9 days, BB, QQ, BB, Face up, Face Down, Face Up, though the methods of killings all differed.

Misora then realizes that the letters B and Q look the same, if reversed, in lower case: b q. However, Luxaky says that her reasoning can only be 30% correct, since he points out that initials are always written in capital letters. She starts to feel down about the possibility of being wrong, until Luxaky mentions the word how cruel it is to kill a child. Misora thinks about how Luxaky said killing a child or adult was cruel, and starts to focus on the word child then to small child.

She then concludes that lower case (or small) letters would work in this instance, since The killer chose a child as his victim. Because shes a child, its lower cased. And thats why he put her faced down reversed!
