Page 4 Shinigami (pg. 89 104)

Mello describes about how hard it would be for most people to kill another human being. He goes on to say that humans are pretty tough and dont die very easily, and wouldnt want to kill another, nor be killed themselves. He also refers to how the Death Note goes beyond this reasoning.

Beyond Birthday wasnt a person that struggled with the idea of killing, because being a murderer wasnt his objective, yet why didnt he suffer by doing it The real reason was because he had natural Shinigami eyes. (Note: Most easily explained is that Beyond Birthday had ESP) Finding people with the same first and last name initials on the specific days wasnt hard for him, even in a city like LA with 20 million people. Killing was natural to him because he knew when they would die.

Unlike the trade with a shinigami for half of your life to receive the shinigami eyes, Beyond Birthday had them from the very beginning, knowing peoples names before they were born, and being able to read when they would die before even meeting them. He even knew when his parents would die from the time he was born. Beyond Birthday had the shinigami eyes Beyond (his) Birthday. (ie, proper English wise, his name should really be Before (his) Birth Day.)

Due to his powers, when he became an orphan, this is why he was adopted into Wammys House, and became the second child known as B.

On August 19th, at 6 am, in a bed on the second floor of a Prehab Storage in the West Side, Beyond Birthday practices his laughing. He knows that Misora is Ls eyes, hands, and feet, and Ls shield. He remembers about how he attacked Misora, and knew that she wouldnt die on that day, but much later. If he tried to kill her, he would fail, and there would be a number of people that could replace her. He knows that shell discover the secret message at the third crime scene and should be able to move on to protecting the fourth victim, which he wishes for, because this will be the true battle, and the true puzzle.

The battle between L and B. L and Bs puzzle.

If L is a genius, B is the greatest genius If L is a weirdo, B is the greatest weirdo. B wishes to surpass L. B laughs naturally, a laugh much like a shinigami. Then he heads to a mirror and gets ready for the day, styling his hair and putting on makeup. The only lifespans he cant see are his own and the worlds.

Back to August 19th. On the West Side, at the third crime scene, Naomi Misora was inside the townhouse of Backyard Bottomslash. Backyard lived with a friend, but that friend moved away after the murder happened.

Backyard Bottomslashs bedroom was on the second floor. Her bedroom had a deadlock as well. And on the walls were marks where the two straw dolls had been nailed, one on the wall opposite of the door, and one on the wall to the left of the door. It was a fancy room, with numerous stuffed animals on the ground, unusual for a woman of 28. There were a total of 28 dolls on the ground (2, 5, 9, 12) and the room smelled of blood.

Misora mutters that Luxaky is half an hour late (they were supposed to meet at 2 pm). She had been searching the room since early morning, for five hours, but come up empty handed. Her phone rings and its Raye. He tells her that he researched into her inquiry and there is no such person known as Luee Luxaky, as she suspected. Since he could speak Japanese, she suspected he may be Japanese, but his name is a fake. Raye then asks her what she has been doing and if she plans to return to the FBI. He begins to tell her not to come back (he would prefer that she live a safe life), but she cuts him off, since she is still running away from a decision.

Back to the second victim case, it took Misora an hour to figure out the missing link the murderer left behind. Since Quarter Queens eyes were crushed, she begins to think about eyes and looks thought the photo album in the cabinet. She notices that in all the photos, there is not one picture of the girl with glasses. The only photo of the girl with glasses is the crime scene photo.

According to the investigation report, the girls eyesite was poor, so Misora comes to the conclusion that she must have worn contact lenses, and that the murderer must have put the glasses on her. She discusses with Luxaky about how the police could easily look over the clue about Quarter Queens eyeglass-contacts. Quarter wore disposable contacts and her mother confirmed that the glasses werent hers. Her mother only saw her daughter in the morgue, when the glasses would already be removed.

The third crime scene is at Glass Station on the West Side Glass(es). This is the message. They begin discussing about how the murderer could find anyone with the initials BB or QQ. There was no one living on the West Side in a 500 meter radius of Glass Station with the initials QQ, but there was only one with the initials BB: Backyard Bottomslash.

Misora is worried if they can solve the last message that the murderer has left behind. Also, she doesnt realize the hints that Luxaky has been giving her, like the album connection.

By the time they finish, its almost noon and they decide to eat lunch. Luxaky invites Misora to lunch, but she declines the offer, afraid of what sugary concoction she might have to face. Plus, she feels that it is time to contact L. She calls him outside, a fair distance from the apartment, after making sure no one is around.

L tells her that he is impressed that she figured out all the clues. Misora tells him that she is headed directly to the West Side crime scene since they dont know when the fourth murder will happen. L tells her there is no need to since he has figured out that the murder will happen on August 22nd, six days from now.

She thinks about the number of days, 9, 9, 4, 9 and is about to ask him how he can be so sure, but he tells her that there is no time to explain and to think about it herself. She agrees and begins to think that the day that the LAPD received the crossword puzzle was on July 22nd, the same 22 number. Misora tells him that she will spend the next six days carefully going over the crime scene and preparing. L tells her to be careful since she is the only person on the case and there is no replacement for her.

Misora tells L that she will be alright, and that she has some fighting skills. He asks her if its karate or judo, but she responds its Capoeira. She explains that she was into street dancing in college and for a woman, its a better fighting technique for her. With karate and judo, one must guard against attacks, so if the attacker is male, she wouldnt be able to protect herself. L is impressed, and says that he must check it out himself on video, but warns that against guns, shell be at a disadvantage.

Misora then asks L if he has an idea of who the culprit might be, which L says, Yes. Although he hesitated to respond and Misora expected he already knew, he tells her The truth is, I knew who the culprit was from the start. The culprit is B.

Digressing to the roots of B, Mello tells how the children of Wammys House are raised to be the successors of L, or replacements. No one knows the roots of L, but Wammy wanted to make copies of him. The children of L, gathered from around the world.

However Wammy wasnt making knockoffs of L, but something close as possible, and the closest were Mello and Near. There was also great pressure on the children, that A committed suicide and B ran away. B is for Backup. B wanted not to become L, but to surpass him. Bs generation were the test types (Mello and Near are the fourth generation). Mello thinks that Beyond Birthday thought As long as there is L, B cannot become L. As long as the original exists, a copy will always be a copy.

Los Angeles BB Serial Killer Case
L.A.B.B. L is After Beyond Birthday.

Mello wonders about how B could kill innocent people and perhaps all B wanted to do was to meet L. If he did, with the shinigami eyes he was born with, he could see Ls name and lifespan. Maybe all he wanted was to know who L was.

So, in the end, it was a detective battle between L and B; the greatest detective vs. the greatest criminal. Beyond Birthday challenged L and L took on that challenge. Mello also mentions that the innocents in the case would have died anyway, even if B didnt kill them (he was only able to kill them because he could see their lifespan) and the only true innocent in the case was Misora.

Beyond Birthday practices laughing and begins to move.
